Balmain is part of the Inner West of Sydney located on the Balmain peninsula surrounded by Port Jackson, a suburb of considerable charm and interest where the modest, pretty houses command prices not dreamt of by their original tenants. The area known as Balmain was part of a 550 acre grant to colonial surgeon Dr William Balmain made in 1800 by Governor John Hunter. The Australian Labor Party was formed and first met here in 1891 and it also boasted its own coal mine in 1897.
